Isay Alvarez will honor her by reprising the lead role in "Cory, the Musical."

In lieu of joining the funeral march for President Corazon Aquino on Aug. 5, theater actress Isay Alvarez will honor her by reprising the lead role in "Cory, the Musical."

Alvarez told Manila Bulletin Online that she was supposed to have sung at the late president's wake last Aug. 3.

"I will not be able to go to the funeral as well but I have been praying for her bereaved family."

Because of Aquino's demise, Alvarez expects herself to get carried away more than before when she again dons the symbolic yellow dress for the musical on Aug. 30 at the AFP Theater.

The actress considers the Cory role as a personal legacy from the late president.

"For the longest time my claim to fame has been 'Miss Saigon,"' she said, referring to the West End musical of which she had been part of the original cast along with Lea Salonga and Monique Wilson, among others. "Now it's my privilege and honor to be identified as the one who plays Cory."

"Cory, the Musical" is a tribute to the inspiring life of the former president told through 19 original songs composed by Lourdes "Bing" Pimentel, wife of Sen. Aquilino Pimentel.

Mrs. Pimentel's own life story was turned into a musical titled "Pag-ibig sa Bayan" in 2007.

Aquino watching the show reportedly inspired Pimentel to write songs for and bankroll "Cory the Musical" under her Buhay Isang Awit Foundation.

"Cory, the Musical" is written and directed by esteemed theater artist and writer Nestor U. Torre.

Other "Cory" cast members are tenor Sherwin Sozon (as Ninoy Aquino), Pinky Marquez (as Imelda Marcos) and Robert Sena (as former Pres. Ferdinand Marcos) along with theater stalwarts like Lou Veloso, Andy Bais and Sheila Asunsion.

"Cory, the Musical" will have 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. shows. For tickets, call Ticketworld at 8919999.
